THEMATIC SECTIONS

PILLAR 1 – MATERIAL REALITY

This pillar focuses on the physical and chemical behaviour of textile materials as they age and interact with their environment. Contributions address degradation, surface changes and sensory performance as observable indicators of material condition over time.

PILLAR 2 – STRUCTURE, FORM & PERFORMANCE

This pillar examines textile structures and garment forms as performance systems shaped by mechanical loads, body interaction and use conditions. Research addresses how structural and design decisions influence durability, functionality and fit throughout the product lifecycle.

PILLAR 3 – HUMAN USE & EXPERIENCE

This pillar addresses textile performance in everyday use, considering wear, care and maintenance alongside user perception and acceptance. Contributions explore how use patterns, handling and subjective evaluation affect product longevity and decisions to keep, repair or discard textile products.

PILLAR 4 – TRANSLATION & METHODS

This pillar focuses on research methods, hybrid and practice-based approaches, and critical reflection on limits and failure. Contributions address how knowledge from material testing, research through design, and real-use observation can be translated into design and development decisions, including learning from breakdown, rejection and loss of performance.

Cross-Sectional Perspective

Design research, including research through design, and material science perspectives are present across all thematic sections, supporting dialogue between analytical, experimental and practice-based research approaches.
